Gender and Sexuality in China (HIS 3117)
This course examines a wide range of gender issues in Chinese cultural tradition, including gender/role constructions and cultural perspectives on sexuality and sexual behavior. It also traces the changing roles of women and men from the the Late Imperial period to the the early women liberation
movements in the Republican years (1911-1949) and finally turns to the Maoist
regime (1949-1976) and the post-Mao period.
This is not a lecture class. The course is based on class discussions.

Grading/Requirements:
Weekly papers of 2 pages, of which you have to complete 8 (5% each, a
total of 40%)
Class participation 20% (class participation includes not only regular
attendance but also active participation in class discussion, the presentation of the reading
selection for a day of his/her choice, and a presentation of his/her research paper)
Research paper 40% The length of the paper is of 10 pages. See handout
with more detailed explanation on what I expect from this paper.
Class Management
Class communications will take place through e-mail. Students are expected
to check their e-mail regularly. Please make sure that the e-mail address
you have registered with the university is right and it is the one you check
regularly.
