First posted mid-day on August 31, 2006, two days after Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29; 45 updates until October 11, 2005 (up to seven updates in a single day). Listed by Google amongst the top information resources for Hurricane Katrina, immediately after FEMA, the National Hurricane Center and Weather.com. Demand was so strong that the SLIS/LSU server crashed, and the data was transferred to the main LSU server. Also incorporated information relating to Hurricane Rita. Originally a 23KB file, 6 pages, with about 40 annotated links; grew to a 158KB file, 49 pages.

Specific research activities:1971-2: Study trip to Brazil during leave of absence from the University of Leeds, visiting libraries in all parts of that country, to evaluate the state of development of Brazilian librarianship.

1976: Participant in research project to identify information needs of physicians in New York State.

1979-80: Research into the automation of libraries and bibliographic information systems in Brazil, for Ph.D. thesis; interviews with 55 persons in six cities, plus additional data collection via mail.

1984-5: Coordinator of research project to define the information needs of industries in João Pessoa, Brazil, with Federal government financial support. Interviews with the managers of 70 companies; data analysed by SPSS.

1986-87: Coordinator of research project on the book in Pernambuco State: evaluation, bibliographic control and future perspectives. Exhaustive survey of books published in a major Brazilian state in 1980-4; data registered in Pro-Cite data base, using specially modified format; team of ten students and four professors; personal bursary and two research scholarships from the Federal government.

Indexing serials published in the university, adding data to the general catalog of the university library; evaluating articles published in these serials as a channel for transmission of relevant information. 1997-8: Coordinator of research project on information needs of companies in North East Brazil in relation to Mercosul (the common market uniting countries of Southern Latin America). Personal bursary and two Federal government research scholarships.

1998: Author of research project: An analysis of the effectiveness of Internet as a resource for scholarly communication and information by Kuwait University faculty.

2001-2002: Research projects: Digital Libraries in Brazil; Louisiana Library Web Sites; Comparative analysis of Software for the Presentation of Book-length Texts in Digital Libraries.

2005: Research project supported by Summer Stipend award: Digital inclusion in a major Brazilian city: surmounting the digital divide in Recife. I undertook systematic analysis of digital inclusion projects, such as telecenters, schools of information technology and citizenship, and related projects, such as converted buses which offer IT training to deprived neighborhoods. I carried out structured interviews and applied questionnaires in eleven institutions; eighteen instructors and 103 students responded. Above all, I attempted to evaluate the impact of these activities on the local community. Data has been fully calculated; detailed results have been written up and submitted to a refereed publication.
