This paper will examine the relationship at the mass level between support for European integration and ideology. Both left-right ideology and variants of a "new politics" second dimension of ideology will be considered. Two possible formulations of this second dimension will be considered. The first is the familiar post-materialist index. The second is an index constructed to parallel the GAL/TAN ideological dimension analyzed by Marks and Hooghe. Exploratory factor analysis suggests that the "New politics" cleavage is multi-dimensional. Both affective and utilitarian support for the EU are more closely related to the "new politics" dimensions than they are to the traditional left-right ideological cleavage. However, affective support for the EU is found to be more closely related to the "new politics" dimension than is utilitarian support
