My research interests focus on media and civic engagement. Thus my research efforts have focused on television and civic journalism, coverage of minorities, how citizens use media and how media can be more valuable to citizens. Much of my recent work focuses on statewide public affairs television, which is often thought of as a state version of C-SPAN, though there are some significant structural differences. One of my research goals is to actively involve graduate students in my work and then provide opportunities for them to create their own strains of research on the topic.
