Description of the Specific Position for Which You Are Applying
08/03/2005One requirement for the resume and cover letter assignment is that you include a specific description of the job you're applying for. Please write the description in memo form and include the following information:
- Name and location of employer (city and state are sufficient)
- Job title
- Full- or part-time employment (remember, unless you're a graduating senior, a part-time student, or applying for summer employment), you cannot apply for a full-time job. One of the requirements of this assignment is that your resume and cover letter are targeted towards a job for which you currently qualify. If you don't have your degree in hand, you can't qualify for a professional position. I want you to learn how to use what you have to your advantage--not practice making up lies.
- Requirements for employment
- necessary skills
- hours
- education
- Job responsibilities
- Source of information about the job (How did you hear about it? ad in newspaper? posting on the internet or in Career Services? Word of mouth?).
- the url of the relevant spot from the Occupational Outlook Handbook
- the source code for the relevant positions from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (otherwise known as O-Net).
I'll be using this memo to assess how well your resume and cover letter match the reader's needs. With that in mind, you should also include any additional information about the job that you believe I might need to make this assessment, such as having included your high school experience because doing so gives you a particular connection with the reader, formatting your document in a specific way that the employer requested, etc.
Following is an example of this memo: Job Memo Example. You must hand in this memo with the final draft of your resume and cover letter.
