South Central Society for Music Theory

2010 Call for Papers

The South Central Society for Music Theory is open to all interested music theorists, professionals, or students, regardless of locality, although we serve primarily the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Dues are $20 annually ($15 for students), with an additional $5 conference fee for those attending the annual meeting.

SCSMT 2010 CONFERENCE

February 26-27, 2010

The South Central Society for Music Theory is very pleased to announce its 2010 Annual Meeting at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Friday and Saturday, February 26-27, 2010, running concurrently with the USM Chopin/Schumann Piano Festival. Janet Schmalfeldt will be the keynote speaker. The program committee solicits paper proposals on any topic relating to music theory, analysis and pedagogy, in standard SMT format (30 minutes, with 15 minutes for questions). We also encourage submissions in unconventional formats (e.g. joint proposals, poster sessions and lecture-recitals), for which additional time may be provided, as appropriate. DEADLINE: Friday, January 8, 2010. Confirmation of proposals received will be made electronically upon their receipt. Authors will be notified electronically of the Program Committee’s decision by the middle of January, 2010.

Submission format:

(1) Proposals should be no longer than three pages (including footnotes), double-spaced, using a 12-point font. Proposals should be anonymous, articulate clearly the paper's premise and its relation to existing music theoretic research, and provide some illustration of applications. Accompanying tables, charts and musical examples are not included in the page count.

(2) Send electronically one (1) copy of your proposal, in MS Word or .pdf format, as an e-mail attachment to: james_s_mackay @hotmail.com. Please put “SCSMT 2010 Proposal” in the subject heading.

(3) Send one (1) copy of an anonymous 200-word abstract, submitted electronically to the address above, for publication in the meeting abstracts booklet. Please put “SCSMT 2010 Abstract” in the subject heading.

(4) Include a cover letter, submitted electronically, listing the title of the paper, the author's name, with rank and institutional affiliation (if applicable), and the author's address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Please also list any technical requirements (stereo playback, piano, overhead projector, etc.) in the cover letter. Please put “SCSMT 2010 Equipment Needs” in the subject heading.

(5) If the author is a student wishing to be considered for the SCSMT Student Paper Award, please indicate student status in the cover letter. Candidates for the student award must submit a copy of the full paper to the address above by Monday, February 1, 2010.
