- Find Newsgroups

- Search Newsgroups
- A guide to using Internet resources other than the web. Here you can find information on listservs, MOOs and MUDs and even that web precursor, the gopher.

- Who Owns It?
- The place to go if you're trying to find out who owns a particular webpage. Sometimes you can get unlisted phone numbers here as well.

Search Engines
- Altavista
- My favorite. Try the advanced search features which allows more precise Boolean searches.
- Ask Jeeves
- For the search impaired. It allows you to ask questions. Sometimes, it answers them correctly.
-
- Excite
- A good all-around search engine, this one is particularly good if you're looking for computer programs and similar stuff.
- Google
- Ranks webpages by popularity, giving you the most popular first. Not a good concept for the serious researcher. However, Google does have one outstanding feature -- its search engine scans Adobe .pdf files and creates them in text format. This allows you to import those files directly into programs such as Access or Excel.

- Infind
- InfoMine
- Infoseek
- Lycos
- Good search engine and popular with those trying to find music files or movie files.
- News Research
- Resource Shelf
- Signpost
- The archives of the Scout Report. This site lists the webpages that the Scout Report has investigated and pronounced well done. Good place to find reliable sources of web information.
