The Battista lab focuses on a variety of different aspects in microbiology and molecular biology. The study of naturally occuring ionizing radiation resistance in prokaryotes, especially among members of the bacterial genus Deinococcus. Most of our work focuses on the species Deinococcus radiodurans. We are also involved in characterizing the mechanisms for ionizing radiation and desiccation resistance. The Battista lab has also broke into the field of metagenomics. In more recent years, we have developed a method to retreive specific DNA sequences from low biomass and complex environmental samples. The captured DNA is then sequenced with next-generation sequencing tecnhnology.
