Highland Art Project Report!

From Monday, September 26-Friday, September 30, 2011, 36 LSU volunteers logged in 1,620 minutes or 27 service hours during VLSU and Highland Elementary Bus Safety Art Project. Each volunteer spent 45 minutes with an elementary class going over a few bus safety rules and then helping the students create a bus safety poster.

The volunteers as well as the students enjoyed working together for a fun, easy week of service. Volunteer LSU will send volunteers back to Highland Elementary next semester for another art project. During the week of Monday, February 6th-Friday, February 10th, 2012, volunteers will again take 45-minute shifts to teach the kids how to “Love Your City, Love Your Neighbor”. The students will learn how to be better citizens as well as give back to the community then they will participate in their own service project, making Valentine’s cards for senior citizens. Make sure to sign up in the spring for another week of creative fun!

Couldn’t make our week of service or can’t wait until next semester to go back? Mrs. Neyland, Highland Elementary’s art teacher would love for you to volunteer any time throughout the school year. She teaches art to 2-5th graders Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 11:00-11:45 a.m., and Monday-Friday 1:45-2:30 and 2:30-3:15.

Mrs. Neyland said, “I would LOVE for LSU students to come help with any of my Art classes. They are good role models for the students and can sometimes break those barriers in students who think they can't do a project or come up with an idea. If anyone also wants to come other weeks to assist in future projects, that would be awesome! More hands on deck are always helpful in Art! Even if they just show up, they can join in whatever we are doing that day and I would be glad to help with any documentation of their service hours. However, if they want to set up times in advance, I can inform them about upcoming projects like painting that could benefit from extra help. Thanks for your organization of this very special partnership between our school and VLSU!” Mrs. Nayland’s email is cneyland@ebrpss.k12.la.us.
