Associate Professor Honored for Residential College Efforts
The National Association of College and University Residence Halls, or NACURH, recently presented the Spotlight of the Month Award to John Hopkins for his contribution to the Herget Hall Residential College. Hopkins is an associate professor in chemistry who volunteers his time to provide review sessions and tutoring to help residents gain a better understanding in chemistry.

He was nominated by a residential college resident assistant who commented that “Dr. Hopkins volunteered to be a part of a program that entailed him to tutor residents all night.” The resident assistant said he tutored residents until the early hours of the morning, and after sleeping only a few hours, was able to administer an exam to another class.” The resident assistant says that Hopkins is committed to making sure each and every student has every possibility to succeed.

Swine Palace to Hold Chorus Auditions for “Pump Boys and Dinettes”
Swine Palace Productions announces an audition call for chorus parts in the upcoming summer musical “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” slated for a June 2005 opening at LSU’s Reilly Theatre.

Auditions will take place Sunday, March 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. and Monday, March 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at LSU’s Hatcher Hall, Room 18.

Those who wish to audition must be prepared to sing at least 18 bars of a country western song, and an accompanist will be provided.

Any member of the LSU community may audition, but all cast members must enroll in THTR/MUS 4500 for the summer term. A small stipend will be provided.

Catherine Lemieux Appointed to Professorship
LSU Social Work’s Catherine Lemieux was recently installed as the Margaret Champagne Womack Associate Professor in Addictive Disorders. Lemieux has been with the LSU School of Social Work since 1995. During her tenure at LSU, she has taught research and practice courses. She served as the Interim Dean of the School from May 2002 to August 2003.

The professorship was established through the investment of numerous donors and would not have been possible without the contributions and leadership of Margaret Womack and the late Milton Womack.

 

Regional Writing Conference Held at LSU
The LSU Writing Center recently hosted the 15th Annual Celebration and Conference for the South Central Writing Centers Association, or SCWCA. SCWCA is the regional affiliate of the International Writing Center Association.

Conference attendees traveled from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas. The keynote speaker was Muriel Harris, Professor Emerita of English, Purdue University. Harris founded the Purdue Writing Lab in 1976 and created and edited of the Writing Lab Newsletter. She also founded the Purdue OWL and authored numerous books and articles on writing center work, teaching writing and Writing Across the Curriculum programs. The conference’s featured speakers were Neal Lerner and Paula Gillespie, authors of The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring.
