Satisfactory Academic Progress
Checking Eligibility Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) will be checked at the end of each spring semester. It will also be checked any time work is retroactively updated with the Office of University Registrar.
Definitions
Academic Year The academic year is defined as Spring Intersession, Summer, Summer Intersession, Fall, Wintersession, Spring.
Cumulative Grade Point Average The cumulative grade point average is calculated based on all college coursework accepted by LSU at the time of admission or completed at the time Satisfactory Academic Progress is checked.
Attempted Hours Attempted hours are defined as those that the student received either a letter grade or a “W”.
Repeat Coursework Repeat coursework is counted as attempted each time the course is attempted but is calculated into the load requirement only once.
Incomplete Grades Incomplete grades are counted as attempted but not earned.
Audit Courses Audit coursework is not counted as attempted or earned hours.
Academic Bankruptcy Hours earned prior to academic bankruptcy will not be counted as attempted or earned hours for either the load or maximum time frame requirement.
Transfer Students (For all UG/GRAD/VETM/LAW) At the time of admission, transfer students will be required to meet the appropriate grade point average as defined above. These students will not be checked for a load requirement. The maximum time frame will not be reviewed at the time of entry.
Re-Entry Students (For all UG/GRAD/VETM/LAW) At the time of admission, re-entry students will be required to meet the appropriate grade point average as defined above. For the load requirement, students will have their last academic year attended reviewed. The maximum time frame requirement will not be reviewed.
Subsequent Degrees Students pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree may only receive financial aid for a maximum of 60 attempted hours beyond the first degree.
Students pursuing a second Master’s degree may receive financial aid for a maximum of five years from the first semester enrolled in the program.
Students pursuing a second Doctorate degree are not eligible for federal financial aid.
Students pursuing a third Bachelor’s or Master’s degree are not eligible for federal financial aid.
Re-establishing Eligibility For a student to re-establish eligibility they must either (1) receive an approved appeal or (2) meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements at the end of the next spring semester.
Appeals Students who do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) or are pursuing a subsequent degree as defined above may appeal to an existing Ad Hoc committee formed by Academic Affairs if they have special circumstances which contributed to their situation. After spring grade check, an appeal form will be automatically mailed to students not meeting SAP to be completed and returned to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Aid. If the appeal is approved, the student is eligible to receive federal financial aid for the academic year. If the appeal is denied, the student is not eligible for federal financial aid for the academic year. Students who are denied cannot re-appeal within the same academic year.
Appeal Deadlines To ensure adequate processing time for a student to receive funds, students must submit an appeal within three weeks from the date the appeal is mailed to the student. Students not meeting this deadline may have a delay in the processing of their aid if their appeal is approved. |
