Dr. Ronald Gough

Ronald H. Gough, a native of Grayson, La., earned B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in dairy foods technology at LSU before being employed as general manager of the dairy division of Giant Enterprises, Inc., in 1970.

In 1972, he joined the LSU Department of Dairy Science as an assistant professor; he is now a professor in that department. His research has been in the areas of fermented foods, frozen dessert quality, shelf life of dairy products, dairy plant wastes and use of bioluminescence to determine raw and pasteurized milk quality. He has written 80 publications in dairy science, served as major professor for 14 M.S. and four doctoral students as well as serving on an additional 75 graduate committees.

Dr. Gough has received many Gamma Sigma Delta teaching awards and has served as an undergraduate faculty advisor to dairy foods students since 1972. He has played a major role in teaching and subsequent placement of these students in the dairy processing industry.

Dr. Gough was president of the Southern Division of the American Dairy Science Association in 1999-2000 and has held many other offices and served as chair and member of numerous committees.

This professorship is funded by contributions from friends of Gerald Simmons.

Gerald A. Simmons, a native of Simmesport, La., earned a bachelor’s degree from LSU in 1957. While at LSU, he worked in the Department of Dairy Science. In 1958-59, he was an assistant county agent in Cameron Parish; in 1959 he became legislative and membership director of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation. In 1966-67, he served as an assistant legislative director of the American Farm Bureau Federation in Washington, D.C.

In 1967 he returned to Baton Rouge as membership director of the Chamber of Commerce and in 1973 became executive manager of the Louisiana Dairy Products Association, the position he holds now. He was chosen for this job because of his outstanding organizational skills, his knowledge of the legislative process and his longtime working relationship with the Louisiana processing industry. He uses these skills effectively in Association operations.
