LSU Women’s Center Director appointed to Mayor’s Commission

March 2018

In January, LSU Women’s Center Director, Summer Steib, was one of several selected for Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome’s Women's Advancement Commission. Broome, who is East Baton Rouge Parish’s first elected female mayor-president, said that she wants feedback on how the local government can help Baton Rouge women.

“It is truly an honor to be asked to serve Mayor Broome’s inaugural Women’s Advancement Commission,” Steib says. “I, along with many other dynamic leaders in our community, are working together to address major gaps and obstacles that are impacting women and girls in Baton Rouge.  As a commission, we have identified five keys areas of focus: women in leadership, domestic violence & sexual assault, social services (such as housing and childcare), healthcare, and business & economic development.”

Steib is a native of Baton Rouge and holds degrees from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Alabama.  She holds a Masters of Arts in Women Studies.  Steib currently serves as the vice president of the board of directors for the YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge, chair of the governance committee for the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault, is a member of the Sexual Trauma Awareness & Response Center’s Advisory Committee and serves as a facilitator for the Victim/Offender Dialogue program through the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

Steib says she will be serving on the women in leadership and domestic violence & sexual assault subcommittees.  Each committee is working toward actionable deliverables to address community needs, and she expressed that “Mayor Broome is especially passionate about finding solution to address sexual assault & domestic violence on our community.  She has charged the Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault subcommittee with thinking outside the box to find solutions to these deadly crimes.”

“Women are joining forces nationwide to address gender inequality issues, and their voices are being heard,” said Mayor-President Broome. “When I took office, I pledged to listen, learn, and lead. The advancement of women is critical to the success of our city and is certainly a priority of my administration.”

Others serving on the commission include Shon Baker, Dima Ghawi, Twahna Harris, Racheal Hebert, Valerie Jackson Jones, Mary Moss, Dianna Payton, Leigh Phillips, John Price, Shanta Proctor, Valerie Richardson, Jan Ross, Deborah Sternberg, Yao Zeng.
