2018 Louisiana Bass Fest

About the Festival

Louisiana Bass Fest is about contribution, collaboration, inspiration and sharing our passion with all bassists. My main purpose is to create educational and performance opportunities for young bassists with the hope that they are able to continually explore the beauty of bass playing. 2018 Louisiana Bass Fest marks the 7th year of our annual bass gathering. It was incredible that 3 of the 2017 Louisiana Bass Fest competition winners were also prize winners in the 2017 International Society of Bassists Solo Competitions.

Our featured guest artists this year are my former teachers James VanDemark (Professor of Double Bass at the Eastman School of Music) and Derek Weller (Faculty at Interlochen Arts Academy). Guests include Bill Schettler and Paul Macres from Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Baton Rouge Symphony Principal Bassist John Madere and Assistant Principal Bassist Yong-hao Pan, and my colleague Bill Grimes. Be sure to join us if you are determined enough to play the coolest string instrument!

There will be master classes, the Young Artists Solo Competition, the Young Bassists Competition, and bass ensemble rehearsals on March 17 and 18. This year we are fortunate (again) to have Interlochen Center for the Arts sponsor one full tuition scholarship ($8,904) for the 1st prize winner of the Young Bassist Competition age 18 and under to participate the Interlochen 6-week summer camp. The Master Players Festival at University of Delaware will sponsor two $1600 scholarships to attend the two –week intensive summer festival. The Guarneri House and the Quantum Bass Center will be in residence and sponsor our prize winners as usual. All prize winners will get a set of Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe Strings sponsored by the Pirastro Strings.

All of our events are free and open to the public, and more sponsorships are on the way. Stay tuned for more updated information!
