Vice Chancellor for Information Technology
Louisiana State University

Brian Voss serves as Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at Louisiana State University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. As VCIT, Voss leads the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization which is responsible for the extensive computing, network, and application services used by LSU students, faculty, and staff. He was appointed CIO in 2005 and Vice Chancellor in 2008. Voss reports directly to Provost Astrid Merget, and serves as a member of Chancellor Martin's Executive Cabinet.

Voss leads the provision of University’s information technology resources at a level of excellence and acquires advancing technologies to offer students, faculty, and staff the most up-to-date computing services available in their prospective roles on campus. Through a vision of “IT Abundance” that complements the objectives of the LSU Flagship Agenda, LSU has become a national leader in the areas of IT services and infrastructure, high-performance optical networking, and research enablement with IT. Early accomplishments include implementation of the nation's first-of-its-kind IBM P5 series platform in support of research computation at LSU and provision of broad software licensing and online distribution of software to the LSU community.

Voss came to LSU after serving as associate vice president for information technology at Indiana University, where he also served as chief operating officer of the Pervasive Technology Lab. Voss brings expertise in such initiatives as regional optical networking, national research and education networking, and high-performance computing. He has more than 20 years of leadership experience in the information technology field, both in higher education and in the private sector; his experience spans operations and production services, application development, user support, telecommunications, and research computing. Voss has been a leader in national and international high-performance networking initiatives, including Internet2 and National LambdaRail, and has overseen initiatives in the development, engineering, and operation of regional optical networks.

He has authored a number of papers on a variety of IT subjects, and is frequently quoted by news organizations and prestigious IT publications, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, The New York Times, Wired, Computer World, HPC Wire, Campus Technology, and EDUCAUSE. Voss graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and did further graduate study at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He has held positions with Westinghouse Electric, Zenith Electronics, and Mead Data Central during his career, and has served as a consultant to higher education institutions regarding IT support models and optical network infrastructure planning.
