Simonton receives prestigious scholarship from SHAPE America

Baton Rouge, LA -- Kelly Simonton, a doctoral student in the LSU School of Kinesiology is the recipient of SHAPE America's 2018 Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship. The prestigious national scholarship is awarded based on several qualities and skills including scholarly proficiency, leadership, service to school, community and profession, and personal character. Simonton is from Wheatland, Wyoming. He receieved his BS from the University of Wyoming. He completed his MS from LSU in 2016.
Simonton will receive the award in Nashville, TN at the national convention on Thursday, March 22, 2018 during the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony. Since 1995, SHAPE America has awarded scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate student members. The Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship, developed by the past presidents of SHAPE America to honor deserving students, is awarded to three undergraduate students and two graduate students in January of each year.
SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. Since being founded in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in physical education, and our National Standards for K-12 Physical Education serve as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country.
The LSU School of Kinesiology (SOK) advances the understanding of physical activity, sport, and health to optimize the quality of life for diverse populations through excellence in teaching, learning, discovery, and engagement. SOK offers a BS, MS, Online MS, PhD, and two certificate options.
