Emergency Preparation for Athletics Course

This free course will bring together athletic trainers, team physicians, emergency medical technicians and emergency room department personnel for an intensive training session on relevant emergency conditions athletes face. This is a collaborative emergency medicine course (co-hosted by Southern University & LSU) to improve interprofessional skills and communication for the prehospital care of athletes at all levels of participation. This intensive evidence-based medicine course will include both classroom and laboratory components on the following areas:

  • Emergencies in Athletics and the EAP
  • Emergency Evaluation
  • Exertional Heat Illnesses
  • Emergency Airway and Oxygen Administration
  • General Medical Emergencies
  • Hemorrhage Control
  • Athletic Head Injuries
  • Cardiac Conditions
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest
  • Injuries to the Spine
  • Management of Cervical Spine Injuries
  • Athletic Equipment Removal Concepts

The Emergency Care Course was developed in response to Southern University football player Devon Gales’ cervical spine injury. Gales suffered from a spinal injury during a game in early fall 2015 at the University of Georgia.
