Teaching Multicultural Children's Literature, Summer Course Offering
This course is for both secondary and elementary-focused graduate students.
EDCI 7315 provides an in-depth look at culturally diverse children’s literature, past and present, the issues that surround it, and strategies for fostering response and understanding in K- 8 classrooms.
Readings will include a collection of young adult and children’s novels as well as articles on transformational learning theory and the power of literature to shape ideas and understanding about all subject matters.
Course objectives include:
- Fostering an awareness of currently available literature about, and resources related to, culturally diverse groups in the United States
- Gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves as readers as we read and respond to a variety of culturally diverse children’s literature
- Exploration of some of the literary, aesthetic, sociopolitical, and cultural issues and controversies related to culturally diverse children’s literature
- Exploration of strategies for reading and responding to culturally diverse children’s literature in K-8 classrooms
