| June 5, 2008 Michael V. Martin Named Chancellor of LSU at June Board of Supervisors Meeting
BATON ROUGE – Michael V. Martin was approved as the next chancellor of LSU by the LSU Board of Supervisors at its June 5 meeting. Martin, formerly the president of New Mexico State University, was recommended to LSU System President John V. Lombardi by the LSU Chancellor Search Committee, and Lombardi in turn passed on that recommendation to the board. Martin, 61, has served at NMSU since 2004. He interviewed with the committee and also met with various faculty, staff, administration, student and community groups during a two-day visit to campus on May 20-21. In his time at NMSU he was praised for his reorganization of the university’s athletic department and physical plant, as well as his fundraising prowess. A 1969 graduate of Mankato State College, Martin received a Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977 and has since worked in both academic and administrative capacities at universities such as Minnesota, Oregon State University and the University of Florida. “It would be an honor to join the leadership team of a great university like LSU,” Martin said during a faculty and staff forum conducted during his on-campus interview process. “I understand how gratifying and rewarding it can be to work at an institution with the commitment to its students that LSU has.” An agricultural economist, Martin is considered an expert on land-grant universities. “I have devoted my life to public education and specifically land-grant education, because I believe it is one of the great innovations in history,” Martin said. “We had an outstanding search committee to sort through the candidates,” said Lombardi, who worked with Martin at the University of Florida from 1998-1999. “They followed every lead and pursued every idea. (Martin) has demonstrated the kind of independent leadership needed to move this university forward.” Martin was not present at the board meeting due to an obligation to represent NMSU at the Western Athletic Conference meetings in Spokane, Wash. He is expected to take office Aug. 1. “I think we found somebody who will help us to meet the Flagship Agenda and move this university forward,” said board Chair Jerry Shea. Billy Gomila |
