LSU Chancellor Search Committee Recommends Michael V. Martin

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Chancellor Search Committee today unanimously selected Michael V. Martin, president of New Mexico State University, as its recommendation to LSU System President John V. Lombardi as the next chancellor of LSU.

Lombardi will consider the recommendation and could present Martin to the Board of Supervisors at its next meeting on Thursday, June 5.

John M. Hamilton, search committee chair and dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication, praised the committee for its efforts throughout the process.

“We were handed a difficult task by President Lombardi,” said Hamilton. “But I am confident that we found the best candidate for the job. Dr. Martin would be a fine choice to run this university.”

Martin, 61, has served at NMSU since 2004. He interviewed with the committee and also met with various faculty, staff, administration, student and community groups during a two-day visit to campus earlier in the week. In his time at NMSU he was praised for his reorganization of the university’s athletic department and physical plant, as well as his fundraising prowess. A 1969 graduate of Mankato State College, Martin received a Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977 and has since worked in both academic and administrative capacities at universities such as Minnesota, Oregon State University and the University of Florida.

“It would be an honor to join the leadership team of a great university like LSU,” Martin said during a faculty and staff forum conducted on Wednesday. “I understand how gratifying and rewarding it can be to work at an institution with the commitment to its students that LSU has.”

Lombardi, who worked with Martin at the University of Florida from 1998-1999, felt confident that the committee had selected a fine candidate.

“I know Dr. Martin well,” he said. “He is an excellent person. We have a lot of work we want to accomplish (at LSU) and we want somebody who can help us do that.”
