LSU Chancellor Search Committee Named

BATON ROUGE---Louisiana State University System President John V. Lombardi has named a 22-member search committee to recommend finalists to lead Louisiana’s flagship university campus as chancellor.

“LSU’s next chancellor,” said Lombardi, “should have a record of accomplishment in academic environments where a lively competition for financial resources energizes an ongoing and intense focus on high-quality teaching and research.”

John M. Hamilton, Dean and Professor at the Manship School of Mass Communication, was selected by Lombardi to chair the panel, which includes a cross-section of faculty, students and staff as well as community representatives.  Carolyn Hargrave, LSU System Vice President for Academic Affairs, will serve as vice chair.

“Great universities require great leaders,” said Hamilton, “our committee is committed to helping President Lombardi recruit such a person, in the process involving all the constituencies that share our goal of excellence.”

Hamilton has led The Manship School since 1992, first serving as Director and then as Dean when the school, one of the oldest communication programs in the nation, was elevated to a college-level unit in 1994.  The Manship School, whose undergraduate admission standards are among the highest at LSU, has established a national reputation in advanced study of media and politics.

In addition to Hamilton and Hargrave, faculty, staff, students and Administrators on the search committee include: Cassie Alsfeld, LSU Student Government Association President and member of the Board of Supervisors, who will serve as an ex-officio member; Philip Bart, Professor of Geology and Geophysics; Claude Bouchard, Executive Director, Pennington Biomedical Research Center; Carolyn Collins, Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean, University College; Kevin L. Cope, Professor of English and Faculty Senate President; Barry Dellinger, Professor of Chemistry; Tim Fields, LSU Staff Senate President; Gaines Foster, Chair and Professor of History; William Grimes, Professor of Music; W. Douglas McMillin, Professor of Economics; Dorothy Prowell, Professor of Entomology; Harry Roberts, Boyd Professor of Coastal Studies; Kelly Rusch, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Cherie Teamer, Chair-elect, LSU Student Union Board; and Donna Torres, Associate Vice Chancellor for LSU Accounting Services.

Representing support organizations and community groups will be: Elaine Abell, Lafayette attorney; John Barton, Jr., Baton Rouge attorney; Guy Campbell, Monroe attorney; G. Lee Griffin, retired Baton Rouge bank executive; and Robert Hollier, retired Opelousas oil, gas, and energy executive.

Higher education search consultant Bill Funk of R. William Funk and Associates of Dallas will assist in recruiting candidates for the post.  Once a pool of applicants is narrowed to three or four finalists, candidates will be invited to LSU for interviews with campus and community groups.  Recommendations on who should be LSU’s next chancellor will be submitted to Lombardi who will then make his recommendation as president to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Six LSU Board members will serve as liaisons to the search committee to follow the progress of the search and inform the Board as appropriate. Designated board liaison members include Chairman Jerry Shea Jr. of New Iberia, Chairman-elect James Roy of Lafayette, and Board Members Alvin Kimble of Baton Rouge, Laura Leach of Lake Charles, Hal Hinchliffe of Monroe, and Stanley Jacobs of New Orleans.
