Chancellor Search Committee Selects Two for Background Checks

BATON ROUGE---The LSU Chancellor Search Committee designated two applicants to undergo a background check and an examination of references during its meeting on Monday.

Janie M. Fouke, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Florida, and Jon Whitmore, president of Texas Tech University, were selected by the committee, which will begin a process of looking into the two candidates’ histories and references.

Whitmore and Fouke were two of nine applicants, though Committee Chair John M. Hamilton, dean of LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication, stressed that nobody was being eliminated from the search process.

“We have to start somewhere, and this will just be a starting point for the search,” he said.

William Funk, of Funk & Associates, a search firm the committee has hired, added that the process of recruiting applicants was ongoing.

“We will continue to recruit individuals,” he said. “As we go through the next several weeks, we will continue to engage those individuals to apply publicly.”

The other seven applicants are as follows:

  • Edgar Radcliffe Anderson Jr., president and CEO of Anderson Medical Consulting;
  • Amit Chakma, vice president and provost at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada;
  • Tito Guerrero III, vice president and associate provost for diversity at Texas A&M;
  • James R. Hupp, dean of the University of Mississippi’s School of Dentistry;
  • Stephen B. Jones, chancellor of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks;
  • Colin G. Scanes, vice chancellor of research and economic development/dean of the Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and
  • Jeffrey S. Vitter, dean of the College of Science at Purdue University.
