Chancellor Sean O'Keefe and other LSU officials took part in groundbreaking ceremonies at the construction site of the New Alex Box Stadium Aug. 6, 2007. The new stadium, located at the corner of Nicholson Drive and Gourrier Lane, will seat 8,700 fans. It is expected that the stadium will be completed by Fall 2008, and LSU is scheduled to play its first game in the new facility in February 2009. LSU observed Memorial Day 2007 by paying tribute to Hospital Corpsman 3 Lee Hamilton Deal (above left), a West Monroe native and University alumnus who was killed in May 2006 in Iraq. Chancellor Sean O'Keefe joined the LSU Corps of Cadets to host the 2007 Chancellor's Day Parade. The event is an opportunity for the chancellor to re-assert the University's commitment to a military presence at LSU and express support for ongoing efforts to strengthen the Corps of Cadets. The Commandant of Cadets uses this event as the official Change of Command Ceremony when a new corps commander officially takes command of the LSU Corps of Cadets. Above left: At a press conference Feb. 23, 2007, Chancellor Sean O'Keefe announced a $25 million gift to LSU from LSU alumni Emmet and Toni Stephenson. The donation is among the largest gifts ever to LSU A&M and accelerates the momentum of the Forever LSU campaign. Approximately $15 million is committed to the E. J. Ourso College of Business, including $11 million to create the Stephenson Disaster Management Institute and $4 million to the Entrepreneurship Institute. Another $1 million will go to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. The remaining $9 million will be added to the above gifts or used to fund other programs at LSU. The national launch of the Forever LSU: The Campaign for Louisiana State University took place June 19, 2006, at the Lincoln Center in New York City. More than 200 University friends and supporters attended the event, which featured keynote speaker LSU alumnus and former Clinton adviser James Carville. Other stops on the week-long launch tour included Washington, D.C. and Houston, winding up with a celebration in Baton Rouge. The four-year, $750 million fundraising effort will culminate in 2010, the 15th anniversary of LSU's founding. LSU Chancellor Sean O'Keefe delivered the address and 3,275 students received degrees at LSU's 256th commencement ceremonies in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Friday, May 20. At the start of the ceremony, LSU System President William Jenkins officially recognized O'Keefe's chancellorship by placing a University Medal around his neck. Honorary degrees were awarded to LSU alumna Donna Brazile, left, who became the first African-American woman in American history to lead a presidential campaign when she managed the Gore-Lieberman 2000 campaign; and to Dr. Huel Perkins, who was the first African-American to achieve professional tenure at LSU, to serve in the upper administration at LSU, and to be named professor emeritus at LSU. Both received doctor of humane letters degrees. |

The event gave employees a chance to meet Chancellor Sean O'Keefe, as well as visit with old friends from across campus. an internationally known peace activist, with a gift, as is custom. |

and facilities on campus: SuperMike, one of the world's fastest supercomputers;
the new Securities Markets Analysis & Research Trading (SMART) Lab

Technology Residential College. |

victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Chancellor Emmert,
Provost Lindsay, LSU's Corps of Cadets, Student Government President
Darrell Broussard and Vice President Mark Higgins, and Carroll Herring,
director of the Fire and Emergency Training Institute, all took part
in the ceremony. Attendees then used posterboards to form a Human Flag. |

Community
leaders, City and State government officials, and Chancellor Emmert
broke ground December 10, 2002 on Baton Rouge's new downtown Arts
Block. Officially named the Shaw Center for the Arts, the development
will include a new LSU Museum of Art, the LSU School of Art, the Douglas
L. Manship Sr. Performing Arts Theater, as well as restaurants and
shops. The Center is slated to open in 2005.
