
Karmen graduated with honors from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas with her bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders. She received her masters degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her thesis examined how children’s language ability affects the way they react to and deal with conflict situations. Following graduation, she worked as a speech language pathologist in early intervention and the public schools. Her research interests include examining best practices in communicative interactions between speech language pathologists and their clients, child language acquisition in multi-cultural populations, and the effects of socio-economic status on language acquisition and parent training. As a doctoral student, Karmen is currently part of the research team investigating the effects of dialect and SLI status on children’s language development. She is also currently working on a project examining themes in communication interactions between speech language pathologists and their clients’ caregivers.
