Hydric Soils Identification Course Oct. 19-20

October 19-20, 2017

8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The CC&E's Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences will host a two-day workshop addressing the field identification and delineation of hydric soils. Workshop attendees will gain the skills required to identify hydric soils in the field and conduct hydric soils delineations within Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast Region. Additionally, the workshop will be applicable to those working throughout the Atlantic region and other areas of the country.

Workshop presentations will:

  • Introduce the formation and morphology of wetland soil features
  • Outline data collection requirements for proper hydric soil description and identification;
  • Examine application of hydric soils to state and federal wetland delineation processes;
  • Demonstrate the use of hydric soils indicators for wetland delineation.

Workshop presenters have 20+ years of combined experience in hydric soils and wetland delineation and have conducted wetland delineations in more than 30 states and every region of the country. Leading the course are Jacob Berkowitz, Ph.D., adjunct professor of Oceanography & Coastal Science, and John R. White, Ph.D., professor of Oceanography & Coastal Science, both at LSU.

Attendees should be familiar with general wetland delineation principles; however, a strong background in soil science or hydric soils is not required. Each day of the workshop will include interactive classroom presentations and field demonstrations in the Baton Rouge area. As a result, participants will encounter field conditions (rain, walking on uneven ground, insects, muddy soil, etc.) and must bring appropriate field clothing and a water bottle. Learning materials, a certificate of completion, and box lunches will be provided to individuals participating in the workshop.
