Organization Spotlight: Sportsman Fishing Club

What is the purpose of your organization? The Sportsman Fishing Club at LSU is an organization formed for LSU students wanting to compete in various collegiate bass fishing events around the country. Collegiate bass fishing tournaments are a great way for students to get involved in competitive bass fishing and may help those who want to pursue a professional career on the Bassmaster Elite Series or FLW Tour. These events are hosted by National Guard College Fishing (FLW Outdoors), College BASS, and the Association of College Anglers. Collegiate bass fishing events allow college students the opportunity to qualify for some of the most prestigious bass fishing tournaments in the world such as The Bassmaster Classic, Forest Wood Cup, or The Bass Federation National Championship.

What annual events are sponsored by your organization? Our club competes in collegiate fishing events hosted by FLW Outdoor, BASS, and the Association of Collegiate Anglers.

What honors, awards, and/or accomplishments has your organization recently achieved? The Sportsman Fishing Club at LSU finished 5th in the 2010 College BASS National Championship which aired on ESPNU. We are the reigning College Classic Champions after our victory over Alabama in the 2011 College Classic hosted in conjunction with the 2011 Bassmaster Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana, this February. We will defend tour title at the 2012 Bassmaster Classic next February in Shreveport.
The Sportsman Fishing Club at LSU finished 4th in the 2011 Nation Guard College Fishing Texas Division Regional held on Lake Somerville and hosted by Texas A&M this October. The 4th place team of Tad Murdock and Tim Morris also qualified for the National Guard College Fishing National Championship to be held in the spring of 2012. Their qualification for the national championship was a first for the LSU fishing program. Coverage of the 2011 Texas Division Regional will air on NBC Sports(Formerly Versus Network) this December.
The Sportsman Fishing Club at LSU currently has an 8th place national ranking in the College BASS rankings and a 12th place national ranking in the EarthSports.com rankings.
