Organization Spotlight: UNICEF
Monday, November 7, 2011
What is the purpose of your organization? UNICEF is a relatively new organization at LSU. The purpose of UNICEF is to assist the United Nations Children’s Fund in its efforts to provide long-term humanitarian aid to children in developing countries. Specifically, the club will achieve this through three activities- fundraising, advocacy and education, and community service.
How do students get involved in your organization? The organization is divided into three branches, and students will be able to participate in fundraising, advocacy, or community service committees. Each committee will meet twice a month, and members can attend as many meetings as they want.
What annual events are sponsored by your organization? Fundraising projects sanctioned by UNICEF’s US Fund include Trick or Treat for UNICEF and The Water Tap Project. Local service projects are planned with BREC and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.
Does your organization have a website that students can search for further information? A website is currently being created. Prospective members can check out our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/UNICEFLSU or contact an officer for more information.

What honors, awards, and/or accomplishments have your organization recently achieved? Because our organization is new, we have yet to be largely recognized in the community. However, UNICEF at LSU was recently featured in the Daily Reveille and also participated in UNICEF’s annual Campus Initiative Summit in New York the first week of October. UNICEF at LSU also just raised an outstanding $5,027 dollars for Trick or Treat UNICEF. UNICEF nationally has an annual campus challenge to see which campus can raise the most money. Last year Ohio State won with $10,500.
