The J. Bennett Johnston, Sr., Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, invites applications for the position of a Research Specialist 1. Research Specialist 2 may be considered for those with the additional qualifications.
This position is a member of the Accelerator Group to aid operation and maintenance of the CAMD synchrotron which is a major research facility at LSU.
The individual chosen for the position will be trained and be responsible for performing regular operational duties detailed in the published operations schedule. In addition to supporting regular operations, the candidate will also participate as a team member of the Accelerator Group in studies of the accelerator performance leading to improved performance of the storage ring. The candidate will perform maintenance, repair and upgrade to electronics, electrical systems and plumbing of the accelerator and will be able to independently take projects to completion. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
The candidate must possess analytical thinking skills and the ability to process and analyze data that will provide a better understanding of the properties affecting accelerator performance. The working hours are flexible but occasionally require evening and weekend shifts for efficient operation of the accelerators.
Required Qualifications (Research Specialist 1):
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field and a minimum of 1 year of related experience. Alternatively, a candidate with more than 5 years’ experience in the maintenance and operation of large-scale computer-controlled electrical systems will be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
Required Qualifications (Research Specialist 2):
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience. Alternatively, a candidate with more than 7 years’ experience in the maintenance and operation of large-scale computer-controlled electrical systems will be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree.
Preferred Qualifications (Both Levels):
Experience with accelerators or experimental systems that incorporate computer control of electrical systems and power supplies is desirable as well as experience with system level maintenance and repair of electronics and electrical systems.
