Research Specialist 2 – Assistant Beamline Scientist   

Job Description:

This scientific group member position is a non-supervisory position at CAMD synchrotron light facility. The job responsibilities include oversight of the design, development, and construction of beamlines and experimental endstations, in addition to supervise and/or conduct scientific experiments and analysis of data performed at the CAMD experimental stations. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • 50% Maintenance, both hardware and software, and daily operation of beamlines. Based on user needs, initiate design and fabrication of new and existing beamline components for the scientific group. Work in close collaboration with all beamline scientists.
  • 40% Active and pro-active participation in ongoing research projects. Collaborate with and initiate new internal and external users and assist with their experiments - which requires in-depth understanding of various experimental spectroscopy/scattering techniques and associated analysis. Work closely with and direct users at spectroscopy, scattering, and exposure beamlines.
  • 10% Work constructively with CAMD scientific staff with development in alt beamlines and educational outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) or related field and two (2) years of related experience. Individual must be mechanically inclined, a good problem solver, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.  Laboratory experience with electronics & control software a plus. Good communications skill required.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree and 3-5 years related experience. Familiarity with X-ray/VUV physics and related analytical techniques; knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.

Special / Physical Qualifications:

Due to the nature of the position and / or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to  drug / alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67 and pre-employment screenings (drug screen, physical examination, and background check) as required by LSU FASOP HR-04. May be required to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Additional Information:

LSU requires the COVID-19 vaccine for all students, faculty, and staff or mandatory monthly testing. New employees must either submit proof of vaccination by October 15, 2021 or within three (3) days of their official start date, otherwise be entered into the mandatory monthly testing protocol beginning in November 2021.
