On Feb. 3, Governor Edwards called for a special session of the Legislature to address the state’s projected current-year budget shortfall of $304 million. Special session will convene on Feb. 13 and end no later than Feb. 22.
Today, the governor issued a budget proposal that would spare LSU and higher education from budget cuts if the Legislature agrees to use $119 million from the Rainy Day fund. The fund exists for situations such as the current-year shortfall we face. As you know, cuts occurring near the end of the year are much more difficult to make.
At the moment, it appears higher education may be spared any cuts, and that is an enviable starting position for Louisiana’s colleges and universities.
We will keep you up to date as developments occur, and will post all relevant information at www.lsu.edu/budget. As always, feedback and input is welcomed.
