Associate Dean Robin Roberts

Robin Roberts serves as Associate Dean and Director of  Interdisciplinary Programs. Her responsibilities include personnel matters, including promotion and tenure, third year reviews, and professorships. She works closely with Brenda Macon, Associate Director of Communication and Development, on the college magazine, Kaleidoscope, and with Lois Edmonds, in promoting and managing the college’s eleven interdisciplinary programs: African and African American Studies, Chinese Culture and Commerce, Comparative Literature, Disaster Science and Management, English Language and Orientation, Film and Media Arts, Jewish Studies, International Studies, Linguistics, Women’s and Gender Studies, and the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts. Representing the Dean’s Office in curricular matters, Dr. Roberts serves on the Committee on Academic Planning and Program Evaluation, and as the Director of two interdisciplinary majors, Bachelor of Arts in General Studies, and Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. She works with Dr. Nikki Clark overseeing the college’s secondary education programs. Dr. Roberts also manages the college’s scholarship and award applications for students, and awards for college faculty.

Dr. Roberts received her A.B. from Mount Holyoke College, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania. An early scholar of feminism and popular culture, she is the author of five books: A New Species: Gender and Science in Science Fiction; Anne McCaffrey: A Critical Companion; Ladies First: Women in Music Videos;
Sexual Generations: Star Trek: The Next Generation and Gender; and Anne McCaffrey: A Life with Dragons. In addition, she has published over twenty essays on a wide range of feminist topics, and she is the recipient of two honors from the Popular Culture Association: the Kathleen Gregory Klein and Russel B. Nye Awards. At LSU, she has received the University Volunteer Service Award, the Tiger Athletic Foundation Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award, and the Outstanding Faculty Contribution from Women’s and Gender Studies. She co-founded the LSU in Ireland Program, and has co-directed the LSU in London Program four times. The first faculty member to teach Introduction to Women’s Studies at LSU, Dr. Roberts finds her students help her stay informed about gender issues in popular culture.
