Mourning Dove Trapping and Banding

Location: Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Grand Chenier, Louisiana
Compensation: $10/hour and housing provided
Dates: May 15 – August 10, 2018  
Project Scope: The intern for this position will have many functional roles with the mourning dove banding program including, but not limited to: preparing banding sites; setting and monitoring traps; baiting traps, banding, sexing, and ageing doves; data entry; and other related duties as assigned.

Coastal Plant Communities 

Location: Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Grand Chenier, Louisiana
Compensation: $10/hour and housing provided
Dates: May 14 – August 10, 2018  
Project Scope: The student interns will work full time to conduct an extensive vegetative inventory in each managed and unmanaged unit on RWR. The student interns will collect species level vegetative data and create a detailed vegetative map and data base.

Black-Bellied Whistling Duck Nest Box Evaluation

Location: Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Grand Chenier, Louisiana
Compensation: $10/hour and housing provided
Dates: May 14 – August 10, 2018  
Project Scope: The student intern will work full time to conduct an extensive evaluation of artificial nest box use by black-bellied whistling ducks and other wildlife species on RWR. Student intern will closely monitor nest boxes using trail cameras, visual surveys, and periodic physical box checks.

Quantification of Bird Nests

Location: Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Grand Chenier, Louisiana
Compensation: $10/hour and housing provided
Dates: May 14 – August 10, 2018 
Project Scope: The student interns will work full time to conduct a comprehensive evaluation and quantify nesting birds on RWR terraces. Interns will gain experience with survey design and implementation, nest searching, egg candling, and other skills critical in the field of wildlife management.

Louisiana Coastal Inventory and Study

Location: Baton Rouge
Compensation: $10/hour 
Dates: May 14 – August 10, 2018  
Project Scope: The student intern will contribute to the recreation of a coastal species inventory, analogous to, but significantly greater in scope with respect to the quantity of historical data and data sources, the 1971 Louisiana GMEI using modern techniques, analysis and digital output.

Artificial Reef Monitoring

Location: Baton Rouge
Compensation: $10/hour 
Dates: May 14 – August 10, 2018  
Project Scope: Specific project details will be developed as part of the internship and could include specific monitoring of one reef site (comparing different tools and techniques), the application of one technique across multiple reef sites, or even the comparison of different reef materials or designs.

Upland Migratory Bird Program: Dove Banding

Location: Baton Rouge area primarily but statewide as needed
Compensation: $10/hour
Dates: July 1 – August 31, 2018 
Project Scope: The student intern will assist the Upland Migratory Study Leader in attaining local and statewide banding goals for mourning and other dove species. The student will assist with baiting field sites, maintain equipment, banding, sexing and ageing doves, and assisting in other capacities as needed.

Deer Program: Deer Browse Survey

Location: Statewide as needed
Compensation: $10/hour
Dates: May 1 – June 31, 2018 
Project Scope: The student intern will work part time to assist the Deer Program Manager or DMAP Coordinator in performing statewide deer browse surveys on WMAs and other public and private lands. The student will assist with maintaining equipment, assisting with browse surveys and other activities as needed.
