Three LSU AgCenter researchers, Dr. Fannin, Dr. Bampasidou, and Hasan working on determining the demand of H-2B visa workers in the Louisiana seafood industry were interviewed regarding their project. The article "Guest workers fill key role in seafood industry" was featured in the Magazine Aquaculture North America.
The two faculty have received an award from Louisiana Sea Grant to examine the impacts of labor policy changes on Louisiana seafood processing and production. Objectives of their study include:
- The determination of the extent of uses of H-2B labor in seafood processing in Louisiana.
- The identification of the consequences incurred by Louisiana seafood processing firms under various scenarios of labor shortages and wage increases.
- The identification and evaluation of reasons why producers and processors hire nonimmigrant labor.
- The determination of the value of H-2B labor to seafood processors in Louisiana as well as the respective costs.
