LSU CCELL, CXC to Offer Workshop for NSF Fellowship Applicants

10/05/2010

BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Center for Community Engagement, Learning and Leadership, or CCELL, and Communication Across the Curriculum, or CxC, will host a joint workshop for LSU students applying for a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.

The National Science Foundation, or NSF, Graduate Fellowship is a prestigious three-year grant that provides recipients with $30,000/year stipend and a $10,500/year tuition allowance for graduate study and research.

Workshop attendees will receive in-depth advice on the application process and learn strategies to optimize their application for success. The workshop will explore topics such as developing a strong research essay, optimizing applications for intellectual merit, developing an application strong in broader impacts and using a high-impact written communication style that will get an application noticed. Faculty that have reviewed applications in the past will offer tips on how to make an application outstanding.

Seniors or first-year graduate students in science, engineering, mathematics or related disciplines should consider applying for the fellowship and visit http://www.nsfgrfp.org/ for details and eligibility requirements.

The workshop will consist of two sessions. In the first, Thursday, Oct. 7, from 4:30 – 6 p.m., workshop attendees will go over proposal writing basics, information about applying for the NSF graduate fellowship and a brief overview of the evaluation process. During the second session, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 4:30 – 6 p.m., participants will evaluate each other’s fellowship applications and workshop facilitators will present detailed information on the evaluation process. Both sessions will be held in 143 Coates Hall.

Participants may choose to attend the Oct. 7 session only, but only those in attendance at the first session should also plan on attending the Nov. 9 session.
