Publication Opportunities

Community Works Journal is published by Community Works Institute, in support of teaching practices that build community. Community Works Journal is now in its fourteenth year of publication and continues to meet a crucial need for sharing reflections on teaching, along with models and resources that inspire by example. Community Work Journal looks for articles and essays that highlight important issues, or innovative educational strategies and practices involving educators and students in meaningful work within their communities. Articles may also feature curriculum or program examples, tools and teaching resources. Reflections on teaching, learning and the experience of community through educational endeavors are also of much interest. 

Gateways: International Journal of Community Research & Engagement is a peer-reviewed journal jointly edited and managed by the UTS Shopfront at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and the Center for Urban Research and Learning, Gateways is an online electronic journal concerned with the practice and processes of community engagement and collaborative, community-based, participatory research. The journal also aims to engage academics and policymakers more fully with the concerns of the community and community engagement and to articulate creative tensions between theory and practice.

Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship JCES has defined the young field of engaged scholarship by taking a different approach: Manuscripts must be well written using language accessible to ordinary citizens, not just to trained scholars; presentations must measure up to the highest standards of visual design; and over time the content must move the field forward by appealing to laypeople and academics alike. According to its editor, the Journal has been fortunate to receive many manuscripts from the social sciences, education, and health but needs more from the arts, humanities, science, and engineering.

The Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE) serves as a premier peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal designed to advance the theory and practice related to all forms of outreach and engagement between institutions of higher education and the community. The JHEOE accepts research articles that address the following topics: highlights innovative endeavors; critically examines emerging issues, trends, challenges and opportunities; and reports on studies of impact in the areas of public service, outreach, engagement, extension, engaged research, community-based research, community-based participatory research, action research, public scholarship, service-learning and community service.

Journal of Service-Learning in Higher Education is an online, international, peer-reviewed journal for the dissemination of original research regarding effective institutional-community partnerships.  Primary emphasis is to provide an outlet for sharing the methodologies and pedagogical approaches that lead to effective community-identified outcomes. The Journal of Service-Learning in Higher Education is a subscription-free journal with a review board made up of various academic disciplines of the member institutions of the University of Louisiana System as well as other nationally and internationally accredited colleges and universities and affiliated organizations.

Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning is a national, peer-reviewed journal for college and university faculty and administrators, with an editorial board of faculty from many academic disciplines and professional fields at the University of Michigan and other U.S. higher education institutions. Since 1994, the Michigan Journal has endeavored to publish the highest quality research, theory, and pedagogy articles related to higher education academic service-learning. With Volume 15 (2008-09), the Michigan Journal has expanded its purview to include not only articles about academic service-learning, but also about campus-community partnerships and faculty engaged scholarship

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement is an exciting new journal devoted to promoting a culture of engagement between the university and region through the creation, application, and integration of knowledge. PRISM is multi-disciplinary, publishing quality, peer-reviewed research articles, case studies and applied research articles, and reflections across the full range of disciplinary perspectives. Similarly,PRISM welcomes all forms of analysis and methodologies. 

Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a new, refereed, multidisciplinary, online undergraduate journal that will advance knowledge in new scholarly arenas by presenting intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates. The journal seeks undergraduate contributions to the burgeoning academic conversation on service learning, community-based research, and all related curriculum- and/or research-based community partnerships. The Journal will publish written work by undergraduates in six categories.
